Questions people ask

Do I call my insurer or the glass company first?

Either order works. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs your vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever shop you choose. Calling the glass company first tells you whether it is a repair or a replacement and whether the cost is above your deductible. See glass claims.

Will North Carolina pay for my new windshield?

There is no state program, and NC has no zero-deductible glass law. Your comprehensive coverage normally pays for glass less your deductible, unless your policy includes full glass coverage.

Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?

Sometimes. ROLAGS allows single-line cracks up to 14 inches, but a crack that reaches the edge or runs across the driver’s view should be replaced. See repair or replace.

How long does auto glass repair take?

Impex puts a windshield replacement at about an hour plus a short cure, with most drivers back on the road within two hours; a side window at 30 to 60 minutes; back glass at one to two hours. Camera calibration adds 30 minutes to 2 hours.

What sets the price of a windshield?

Mainly the glass your car needs (OEM or quality aftermarket, and what is built into it: camera bracket, rain sensor, heated area, acoustic layer, head-up display), whether the camera needs calibrating, and your insurance. Impex gives a quote for your car after checking the part by VIN, with no added delivery, fuel or disposal fees.

How do I choose a reputable glass company in Sanford?

Ask whether they order glass by VIN, whether they calibrate the camera themselves, whether the quote includes everything, and what their Google reviews say. Then choose: in NC the choice of shop is yours.

Does Impex have a shop in Sanford?

No. Impex’s shops are in Greensboro and Charlotte. In Sanford and Lee County the work is done by mobile service at your home, your work or wherever the car is parked.

Which towns do you cover?

Sanford and all of Lee County, plus Broadway, NC, Lillington, Pittsboro and Siler City and Southern Pines and Carthage. Impex serves all of North Carolina, so ask if your town is not listed.

Can the work be done in the rain?

Not in the open. Primers and adhesive need dry surfaces, so in rain the work needs a garage, carport or covered parking, or another day.

When can I drive after a new windshield?

The adhesive needs a minimum drive-away time that the Auto Glass Safety Council says varies with the adhesive and the weather. Impex says most drivers are back on the road within two hours, and the technician gives you the time for your job.

What should I avoid after a new windshield?

Impex advises no washing the car and no slamming doors for 24 hours, and avoiding harsh bumps for the first day. After back glass, avoid the rear defroster for 24 hours.

Does my car need camera calibration?

If it has a forward-facing camera at the top of the windshield, usually yes after a new windshield. Impex performs calibration on site when your car needs it. See ADAS calibration.

Is a cracked windshield an inspection problem in NC?

The NC safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) checks the wipers, not the glass itself, and NC has no crack-size rule. A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem.

Is window tint checked at inspection?

Not since December 1, 2025, when S.L. 2025-47 removed tint from the safety inspection. The limits in G.S. 20-127 still apply on the road: at least 35 percent light on windows other than the windshield.

Does a glass claim add insurance points?

No SDIP points, because a glass claim is not an at-fault accident. Insurers may still look at how often you file claims.

Do you take the old glass away?

Yes. Impex says its quotes include everything, with no disposal fees added.

Can I bring my car to Impex instead?

Yes, to the Greensboro or Charlotte shop. Impex says it accepts walk-ins for minor repairs at Greensboro.

Do you replace side windows and back glass too?

Yes. See auto glass repair in Sanford, NC, side window replacement and back glass replacement.
