ADAS Radar Calibration in Sanford, NC

ADAS radar calibration is the aiming of the radar sensor at the front of your car, the one that measures the distance to the vehicle ahead. Impex Auto Glass performs ADAS radar calibration on site, in its own words without the need for a separate dealership appointment, and serves drivers in Sanford and Lee County. This page explains where the radar is, what it does, when it needs calibrating, and why that is a different job from calibrating the windshield camera.

Where the radar is and what it does

I-CAR, the collision repair training body, says forward radar sensors are mounted in or behind the front bumper or grille, and that they feed adaptive cruise control, collision braking and collision warning. On many cars the sensor sits behind the badge in the grille or behind a smooth panel in the lower bumper. Unlike the camera at the top of the windshield, it does not look through the glass, so a windshield replacement on its own does not normally call for radar calibration.

The radar matters for the same reason the camera does. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says front crash prevention uses sensors such as cameras, radar or lidar to detect a vehicle ahead, and that forward collision warning with automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half in its research.

Three short steps: where the damage is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex comes back to you with a quote.

When ADAS radar calibration is needed

I-CAR says calibration is normally required after the radar sensor is replaced, and may be required after the bumper or grille is removed or after front structural repair. In everyday terms, ask about radar calibration after:

  • A new or refitted front bumper cover or grille, or a replaced badge that sits over the sensor.
  • A minor front-end hit, even one that left little visible damage, if the sensor’s bracket could have moved.
  • Front structural repair after a collision.
  • A replaced radar sensor.
  • Wheel alignment or suspension work, on vehicles whose procedure lists it.

Requirements differ from car to car, and I-CAR’s advice is to check the manufacturer’s procedure for each vehicle. Impex identifies the system from the VIN.

Signs the radar is off

  • A warning on the dashboard that adaptive cruise or collision warning is unavailable.
  • Adaptive cruise that loses the car ahead, brakes for traffic in the next lane, or will not engage.
  • Collision warnings with nothing in front, or none when something is.
  • The warning appears after a car wash, mud or ice: clean the bumper area first, as a blocked sensor can show the same message.

How radar calibration works

Like camera calibration, radar calibration is static, dynamic or both, depending on the vehicle. For a static calibration, I-CAR says the radar target is generally made of metal and shaped like a pyramid, set at a measured position in front of the car, and the procedure needs a large area clear of metal objects that could reflect the signal. A dynamic calibration drives the car on the road at set speeds while the system aims itself. Impex says it performs ADAS radar calibration on site; whether a particular car can be calibrated at its parked location, given the clear space a static target needs, is something Impex confirms when you book.

Camera and radar together

Some cars use the camera and the radar together for the same features, and a front-end repair that included a new windshield may need both calibrated. If your car has had glass work and front-end work, say so when you call. The windshield camera has its own page: ADAS calibration.

Why a small error matters

A radar sensor judges where the car ahead is from the angle of the returning signal. If the sensor is aimed a fraction of a degree off, the error is small a few car lengths away and much larger further out, which is exactly where adaptive cruise control and collision warning do their work at highway speed on US 1 or US 421. A sensor aimed slightly to one side can mistake a car in the next lane for the one ahead, or miss a slowing car in your own lane. That is why the procedure aims the radar against a target at a measured position, rather than leaving it as the bumper went back on.

What to tell us when you book

Say what work the car has had: a bumper or grille replaced, a minor hit, an alignment, a new windshield, or a radar sensor fitted. Give the VIN, describe any warning messages on the dashboard, and say where the car will be. Impex uses that to check the manufacturer’s procedure, to see whether the camera, the radar or both need calibrating, and to plan the space the calibration needs.

Insurance

Radar calibration after a collision is usually part of that collision repair claim; after glass work it is usually part of the glass claim. Under G.S. 58-3-180, a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle must let you choose who does the repair. More on glass claims.

Questions people ask

Does a new windshield need radar calibration?

Not normally. Front radar sits in or behind the bumper or grille, not the windshield. The windshield camera is what usually needs calibrating after new glass.

When does front radar need calibrating?

I-CAR says normally after the radar is replaced, and possibly after the bumper or grille is removed or after front structural repair.

Do I need to go to a dealer for radar calibration?

Impex says it performs ADAS radar calibration on site, without the need for a separate dealership appointment.

Why does radar calibration need so much space?

Static radar targets are generally metal pyramids set at a measured distance, and the area needs to be clear of metal objects that could reflect the signal.
