Side window replacement in Sanford is a quick job with an urgent feel. A broken door window means the car cannot be locked and rain gets in, and it usually happens at the worst moment: overnight in a driveway, in a car park during work, after a stone off a truck on US 421. Impex Auto Glass replaces door and quarter glass by mobile service across Sanford and Lee County. Impex says a side window takes 30 to 60 minutes and that you can drive the car immediately afterwards.

Door glass, quarter glass and vent glass
- Front and rear door glass. The windows that go up and down. They sit in a channel inside the door and are held by the window mechanism.
- Quarter glass. The small fixed window behind the rear door, or in the rear pillar of an SUV or van. Often bonded in place with adhesive, like a windshield.
- Vent glass. A small fixed pane at the front or rear of a door, on some models.
Most side glass is tempered: a single heat-treated layer that breaks into small, blunt pieces when it fails. It cannot be repaired the way a windshield chip can, so a broken side window is always a new window. Some newer cars use laminated glass in the front doors, which cracks rather than shattering. Your VIN tells Impex which glass your car takes, and Impex uses VIN-based verification to order the correct part.

Three short steps: where the damage is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex comes back to you with a quote.
How a door window is replaced
- The door panel comes off. The inner trim panel is removed to reach the inside of the door.
- The broken glass is cleared. Pieces are removed from inside the door, where they collect at the bottom, and vacuumed from the seats, carpet and door pockets.
- The new glass goes in. It is fitted into its channel and fixed to the window mechanism.
- The window is tested. It is run up and down to check it moves smoothly and seals at the top.
- The panel goes back on. The door is put back together and the inside cleaned.
If the window was stuck, slow or crooked before it broke, or if it dropped into the door, tell Impex when you call. The cause may be the mechanism inside the door rather than the glass, and it is better to know that before the visit.
Side window replacement in Sanford after a break-in
Most broken side windows in town are break-ins. Report it to the police first if anything was taken, since your insurer may ask for the report number, and photograph the damage. Cover the opening with heavy plastic if rain is coming. Pick up only the large pieces you can handle safely and leave the rest for the technician. Then call: with mobile service you do not have to drive anywhere with an open window.
Tint on a new side window
Factory privacy glass in rear windows is tinted in the glass and matched by part number. Aftermarket film on the old window is lost when it breaks and has to be re-applied to the new one. NC’s limits still apply: under G.S. 20-127, windows other than the windshield must let through at least 35 percent of light, with a light-meter reading over 32 percent conclusively presumed to comply, and reflectance of 20 percent or less, with exceptions for pickups and minivans behind the driver (more in our article on tint after a new window). Tint was removed from the NC safety inspection from December 1, 2025, but the limits remain the law, and G.S. 20-127(g) now requires a driver with tinted windows to roll down the driver’s window when a law enforcement officer approaches.
Before the visit
Tell Impex which window is broken (front or rear door, left or right, or the quarter glass), the year, make and model and the VIN if you have it, and whether the glass is tinted or the window had any problem moving before it broke. Leave the door unlocked or be there with the keys, because the technician has to work from inside the door. Clear the door pocket and the seat next to the window.
Until then, keep the car somewhere dry if you can, cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to the frame, and take valuables out of the car. Do not run the window motor with broken glass in the door: pieces can jam the mechanism. If the car has to be driven, keep it short and slow, with the plastic secured so it cannot flap loose.
Insurance
A broken side window is normally a comprehensive claim in North Carolina, paid less any deductible, and a break-in may also involve a theft claim for what was taken. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose the repair service, and the insurer pays the same whichever you choose. Impex works with all major insurance providers. See the glass claims page.

Questions people ask
How long does side window replacement take?
Impex says 30 to 60 minutes, and you can drive immediately afterwards.
Can you get the broken glass out of the door?
Yes. Clearing the glass from inside the door and from the seats and carpet is part of the job.
Can a cracked side window be repaired?
Usually not. Most side windows are tempered glass, which breaks completely, so the fix is a new window.
Will my new window be tinted like the old one?
Factory privacy glass is matched by part number. Aftermarket film has to be re-applied and must meet G.S. 20-127.
