When a tinted side window breaks, the film goes with it. The new glass arrives clear, or with the factory’s own privacy tint if your car came with it, and anything else has to be applied again. Before you do that, it is worth knowing what North Carolina allows, because the rules are specific, they changed in 2025, and the change is easy to misread. This article sets out what the NC window tint law says, with the statute behind each point.

Factory tint and film are different things
Many SUVs, vans and pickups leave the factory with dark rear windows. That privacy glass is tinted in the glass itself, and a replacement window ordered by the right part number matches it. Impex Auto Glass orders by VIN-based verification, which is how the right tint band and shade arrive. Aftermarket tint is a film stuck to the inside of the glass. It is not part of the window, and when tempered glass shatters it is lost. The film is what the law’s light limits are usually about.

Three short steps: where the damage is, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex comes back to you with a quote.
The windshield
Under G.S. 20-127, tint on the windshield is allowed only along the top: not more than five inches below the top of the windshield, or below the AS1 line, whichever is longer. The AS1 line is a small mark printed near the top edge of most windshields. A clear film that blocks ultraviolet light without obstructing vision is allowed. The windshield rule has no exceptions, not even for the medical permits that apply to other windows.
That matters after a windshield replacement, because a new windshield is a new surface: any strip applied to the old one has gone, and a new strip has to stay within the same limit. On cars with a forward-facing camera, keep film and stickers out of the camera’s view at the top of the glass; see ADAS calibration.
Side and rear windows: the 35 percent rule
- Light transmission. Windows other than the windshield must let through at least 35 percent of light. A light-meter reading over 32 percent is conclusively presumed to comply, which allows for meter tolerance.
- Reflectance. The tint may reflect no more than 20 percent of light.
- Colors. No red, yellow or amber film.
- Exceptions. Multipurpose vehicles such as minivans and pickups may have darker glass behind the driver, and the statute also has exceptions for limousines and for medical exception permits.
A violation is a Class 3 misdemeanor under G.S. 20-127(d).
The 2025 change: tint left the inspection, not the law
Section 22 of S.L. 2025-47, Senate Bill 391, eliminated the inspection of window tint from North Carolina’s vehicle safety inspection, effective December 1, 2025. Since then the inspection station no longer meters your windows. But the limits in G.S. 20-127 were not repealed: they still apply on the road, and a law enforcement officer can still enforce them.
The same statute now has a new subsection, G.S. 20-127(g): a driver with tinted windows must roll down the driver’s side window when a law enforcement officer approaches, or the passenger window if the officer comes from that side.
What the inspection still checks
For glass, the NC safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) now checks the windshield wipers, not the glass itself and not the tint. The wiper rule, 19A NCAC 03D .0536, rejects wipers that do not work freely, cannot clean rain and snow from the windshield, or have missing or damaged blades or arms. Safety glass itself is still required everywhere glass is used in a car (G.S. 20-135).
After a broken tinted window: a short checklist
- Note whether the old tint was factory glass or film. Dark factory glass on rear windows is matched by part number.
- Have the glass replaced first; film goes on after the new window is in and clean.
- Ask your tint installer for a film that meters over 35 percent on front side windows, unless your vehicle falls under an exception.
- Keep anything on the windshield above the AS1 line or the five-inch limit, and away from the camera.

Questions people ask
Is window tint still checked at NC inspection?
No. S.L. 2025-47 removed tint from the safety inspection from December 1, 2025. The limits in G.S. 20-127 still apply on the road.
How dark can side windows be in NC?
At least 35 percent light transmission on windows other than the windshield, with a meter reading over 32 percent presumed to comply, and reflectance of 20 percent or less. Minivans and pickups have exceptions behind the driver.
